Vol. 7 Gongchan is the maknae who is not like a maknae?  

―― Today it’s about Gongchan!
Baro: Like I said before, Gongchan does really well at taking care of himself. It’s not just trying to do things that he doesn’t have to do, because he looks after the hyungs, and does things that we couldn’t have done.
Sandeul: He’s better than I am.
Jinyoung: Better than you? (laugh) By Sandeul’s standards, probably everyone in this world does well.
Everyone: (burst out in laughter)

―― Of course, people who break doorknobs are really rare. (laugh)
Sandeul: That…
Gongchan: But personally, I think that’s the charm to Sandeul hyung.
Sandeul: Gongchan~ (cries) He may be the youngest, but he is a really good person who knows how to be considerate to people.
Jinyoung: Gongchan is really good at noticing things.

―― Is he conscious about doing that?
Gongchan:No, it comes naturally. (As he talks, he gives out bottles of water to the members and staff.)
Sandeul: This is exactly what we mean.

―― I see~
Baro: Gongchan picking up on things quickly has become a habit to him, so he occasionally brings along the things that we forgot to take out.

―― How do the members react, in that case?
Baro: “Gongchan, thank you!”

―― So you guys don’t say things like “Gongchan, there is no need to do so”.
CNU: Of course not.
Gongchan: Everyone is very thoughtful.
Baro: Gongchan’s heart is really beautiful. Even when we are not thirsty, he brings us water.
Jinyoung: That’s what he just did.
Everyone: (laughs)
Baro: It’s not so much consideration in the form of worrying that we may be in trouble, but more of looking out for us.
Sandeul: He is the best!

―― Gongchan is someone with much consideration. Did that happen after he entered B1A4?
Gongchan: It has been like this ever since I was young, because I am the eldest child at home with a younger brother.
Jinyoung: Even though he’s the youngest in B1A4, he has been the eldest at home. So he very naturally showed a hyung-like responsible side to him.
Sandeul: From the way I see it… There is a period of time where the eldest child is the only child right? He does not put too deep a thought into most things. If he had been born as the younger sibling, he would hold his elder sibling’s hands while playing, or assure them that he’s alright if they followed behind him. But as an eldest child, he has to take the lead by holding his younger sibling’s hands, and he cannot not make sure that his younger sibling is alright.
Everyone: Oh oh!
Gongchan: Sandeul hyung is doing really well too.
Sandeul: Gongchan! (cries) It’s like this that Gongchan is always making us feel good and helping us nicely.
Jinyoung: Furthermore, he is really smart!
CNU: A genius!
Baro: Really clever!!
Gongchan: (embarrassed)
Jinyoung: Because of that, he is always able to judge a situation well.

―― You mean he’s able to quickly grasp the mood?
CNU: Yes!
Gongchan: In my opinion, I think CNU hyung is good at grasping the mood.
CNU: No no! (embarassed) You’re the amazing one.

―― Who else in the group is also the eldest child at home?
CNU: Baro.

―― That’s a surprise! So the two youngest members in the group are actually the eldest children at home.
Jinyoung: CNU, Sandeul and I are the hyungs in the group but when we get home it’s the exact opposite. (laugh)
Sandeul: That means that even though Gongchan is younger than us he is a reliable hyung?
Jinyoung: He’s not the hyung. (laugh) He’s the clean-cut maknae!
Sandeul: That’s right! The clean-cut maknae who we are very proud of!

Vol.6 Baro likes to fool around, but gets lonely easily……!?  

―― This time it is about Baro.
Sandeul: (Raising up his hand quickly) I want to speak first!
Baro: Is that alright~ (laugh)
Sandeul: It’s alright! I know a lot about Baro’s good points, leave them to me!

―― In that case, what kind of person does Sandeul think Baro is?
Sandeul: Baro is the always energetic vitamin of the group! And he is a really warm-hearted person.
Baro: Thank you~ Sandeul seems to understand me well. (laugh)
Sandeul: Right? (laugh)
CNU: In that case, I will talk about Baro’s good point too.

―― Please do.
CNU: Baro is someone who works really hard. If you just take a quick look at him, he seems bright and carefree. But he has the ability to look at everything calmly, and definitely has a very easy-going side to him.
Baro: … (smiles)
Gongchan: Also, even if you don’t tell him about what he has to do, Baro hyung grasps the situation well and does it of his own accord. He is very meticulous, and takes very good care of himself.
Baro: On the other hand, I don’t like it when people order me to do this or that. I am someone who wants to do things of my own accord.

―― Baro is someone who is very spontaneous, and acts upon his words.
Baro: If I do not carry out something that I decided to start till the end, I don’t feel happy.
Sandeul: So cool~~!!
Gongchan: Baro hyung is really cool!
Baro: … (embarrassed) Even so, I don’t think it is only me who feels that way. All of the B1A4 members are like so too.

―― Come to think of that, Baro said that he used to have a misunderstanding about Jinyoung (that he looks weak but is actually very manly). How about Jinyoung? Is Baro very different from your first image of him?
Jinyoung: It is different. He was like a very playful maknae in the past (laugh), but in reality Baro is someone who reflects upon himself very much, and improves so quickly.
Gongchan: That is absolutely correct.

―― He does not seem to have anything except good points.
Baro: … (smiles)
Jinyoung: Ah! Baro likes to fool around very much so he oftens plays pranks on us.

―― The playful maknae!
Baro: My personality is one that I cannot keep still. I don’t like being bored. So the moment I become just a little bored, I fool around by playing pranks on the members. (laugh)

―― Playing pranks? What kind of pranks?
CNU: Is it considered pranks? It is more like poking his nose into other people’s business.

―― Compared to other people, Baro has twice the amount of curiosity.
Baro: Be it with regards to music, fashion… It is not interest in just one genre. I am interested in many things so my antenna is always up.
Jinyoung: He is attentive to many issues so whenever something new comes up, he will tell us all about it while impacting us positively.

―― Various factors have established an entirely original style for Baro.
Baro: That is the goal of one’s life!
CNU: However, when that excitement towards an interest is directed towards the members, it becomes troubling for us.
Jinyoung: We have a lot of times in between shoots so when we want to play, we enjoy Baro’s pranks. But when he plays pranks at times that we have to be serious, it is a little troubling. (bitter smile)
Baro: When I poke my nose into their businesses when they are concentrating on something, they all do not bother about me so I am lonely……
Jinyoung: Of course. (laugh)

―― So Baro is an attention-seeker (spoilt baby) who gets lonely easily?
Everyone: Yes. (laugh)
Jinyoung: He is the squirrel that gets lonely easily.
Sandeul: Baro’s nickname is squirrel.

―― They say that if you don’t care enough for a rabbit it will die.
Baro: I am so too. (laugh)
Sandeul: It’s alright! Because to Baro, there is me~!
CNU: The both of them are always playing pranks together.
Baro: Should I say that we’re prank buddies? Whenever I play a prank on Sandeul, he always falls for them. (laugh)
Sandeul: No! I fall for them on purpose. (laugh)

―― Even so, his reaction must be really good. (laugh)
Baro: That’s right. Sandeul’s reactions are always exagerrated so I find it very rewarding to play pranks on him. (laugh)
Jinyoung: They are just innocent sons who are neither well behaved nor bad. (laugh)

My idol: In my 4th year of elementary school, we had a talent show. We put up g.o.d‘s 길 (Road), and I was in charge of Son Hoyoung’s parts. In my schooling days, I danced and sang to H.O.T and Shinhwa. As I grew up, I wanted to be like Rain.
A cool guy: Usher. When I see him enjoying on stage, as a man I also think that he is really cool. I thought, “I want to be a performer like him” upon watching his ‘U Got It Bad’ performance.
In my schooling days, Up until elementary school, I was just a kid with a big build. I never got attention for my looks. When I started growing taller and losing weight in middle school, I think I gained confidence in my looks. Afterwhich, I got casted.
A gift from god: My shoulders. I think that’s the most comfortable answer. Otherwise, my collarbones? Or my particularly outstanding Adam’s apple?
A leading lady you dream of? Senior Go Hyunjung. I fell for her after watching 대물 (Big Fish). I really like her comfortable and warm charm.
Dream come true: Jinyoung’s innocent yet sexy eyes. Sandeul’s pretty lips. Baro’s sparkling clear eyes. If I had to include something about me, my jawline. As for Gongchan… Hmm, there is no one spot I can pinpoint.

[TRANS] 120811 Interview WHAT’S IN Magazine – September Edition

Q. The Japanese version of Sleep Well, Goodnight is a fresh dance song composed by Jinyoung!
Sandeul: We live together in a dormitory. There was a day I was about to go to sleep, when Jinyoung hyung suddenly said “Hey, listen to this!” and woke me up. I was really sleepy then. (laugh) The moment I listened to it I liked it so much I woke all the members up.
Baro: I was really tired, and he woke me up the moment I had just fallen asleep. At first I was going to say “I got it~ I’ll listen to it tomorrow”, but upon listening to it, I liked it so much I started dancing. (laugh)
Jinyoung: He lifted the mood up suddenly.
CNU: We usually have absolute faith in the songs that Jinyoung creates. When I first heard the song, I thought that despite it being very different from what he had created in the past, it was good.
Jinyoung: In reality, I actually hesitated about letting them listen to the song.

Q. Why?
Jinyoung: The chorus is sung in falsetto, hence I thought if it would have been better if I gave it to a female singer instead. But Sandeul’s reaction was so good. I was really glad that everyone said it was good.
Gongchan: I was the only one who did not manage to hear it at the same time with everyone else, but I was more sober than them (because they heard it after getting awoken). I thought it was a really good song. As CNU hyung said, it is of a different style from what he used to do, and hence we decided upon it as the title song for our next single.

Q. The lyrics of the original Korean version were also penned by Jinyoung, and it does show a more matured image compared to as before, with an outlook on the world.
Jinyoung: I guess so. At first I wrote lyrics along the line of dancing together, but it eventually turned out to be about getting rid of a girlfriend and then going to dance.
CNU: The theme of the lyrics is a ‘cute player boy’.
Sandeul: Normal player boys usually enjoy themselves after getting rid of their girlfriends, but for us cute player boys, we give off the feeling that our girlfriends are liberal enough to allow us to go dance.
Jinyoung: Cute player boys who are sorry to their girlfriends for going to play alone.

Q. So the leading character of this song is Jinyoung?
Jinyoung: No no, it is not a personal experience. (laugh) I have never gone to a club before, so most of it is from imagination. It was written with the members in mind. For example, I imagined what Baro would have done, if he was a player boy.

Q. So if you were a player boy who got rid of his girlfriend to go play, where would you go? [T/N: Getting rid here is not a negative meaning, nor does it refer to a break-up. More like temporary separation, for the day etc.)
Jinyoung: There is someplace I’d like to go in the day so I’ll get rid of her in the day. There are many people who cannot ride rollercoasters even though they like it right? I want to go to the amusement park, ride rollercoasters and eat cotton candy.
Sandeul: To a cafe. I’ll order an Americano, turn on my laptop, and give off a vibe that I’m spending time alone… While waiting to meet that somebody.
Baro: You might still be alone even after your coffee is cold. (laugh) I will go to Han River, and eat chicken and drink cola.
CNU: I will devote all my time to the girl I’m dating, as I want to always be with her. After I get rid of my girlfriend and make some personal time, I will watch movies that I did not get to watch.
Baro: I will risk everything for the one woman I give all my heart to.
Jinyoung: Everyone is like that. I too, will never cheat on my girlfriend. I’m worried about not being able to see a girlfriend that I’ve gotten rid of.
Gongchan: If my girlfriend oversleeps, and there is no one who will play with me… I’ll probably go back to sleep too.

Q. How was recording in Japanese like?
Gongchan: It was not our first time recording in Japanese, so we’re more used to it now and are starting to enjoy it.
Baro: Jinyoung hyung did our vocal direction.

Q. We’ve heard that he is surprisingly strict.
Sandeul: I thought that I’d never be allowed out of the recording booth. (laugh) It was absolute hell when we recorded Bling Girl, a song made by Jinyoung hyung, and is also included in our debut Japanese single. I was really scared before we started recording this time, but I managed to understand the demands of hyung a little faster.
Jinyoung: I kept asking for a higher quality, so the recording time extended by a lot. I think I gave the members a lot of difficulties with my “if we sing more, the song will become better” mindset while recording.
Baro: It was hard for him to direct a Japanese song, but I think we perfected the song thanks to him.

Q. The other songs included in this single are cool, strong and electro. Japanese versions of Baby I’m Sorry and So Fine have been included.
Jinyoung: So Fine is a song that has received much love in Korea. I rearranged it for the Japanese version, and added some klaxon sounds. You’ll be able to feel a fresh charm that is different from the Korean version. I believe that upon listening to these 3 songs, listeners will be able to feel how diverse of a group we are.

Q. A song that you would like to listen to before you sleep?
Gongchan: Sung Sikyung‘s 당신은 참… (You Are So…). It is a slow song, and comfortable enough that the moment I put my earphones into my ear, I will fall asleep. It’s really nice to have a voice next to your ear as if it’s whispering to you.
Baro: Justin Bieber‘s Die In Your Arms. The lyrics have absolutely no correlation with sleeping (laugh) But it is a really calming song. It sounds really good in your ears, so please try listening to it before you sleep too.
Sandeul: Kim Dongryul‘s 편지 (Letter). The lyrics speak of an old letter as the theme, and has a back story of revisiting the past. The lyrics are bittersweet. Whenever I cannot fall asleep, the voice in this ballad lulls me to sleep.
CNU: Robin Thicke‘s The Sweetest Love. I’ve always been a fan of his voice. This song has a slight jazz feel to it, and I feel like it’ll be nice to listen to it before sleeping.
Jinyoung: will.i.am‘s This Is Love. Rather than listening to a soft song, I like to listen to something brighter to release the tension. This song is not only upbeat, but it also has a sad feel to it. The arrangement is well done, and do pay attention to the piano sounds and the phrases in the song!

Additional performances for B1A4’s launch commemoration showcase for their second single, ‘Oyasumi good night -Japanese ver.-’ on the 6th of September (Thursday) and 7th of September (Friday) have been confirmed!

There will be two performances, an afternoon and an evening session at both Tokyo and Osaka. The theme for the afternoon showcase will be ‘THE BOYS’, and it will be a stage where they will show off a side truer to themselves, while the theme for the evening showcase will be ‘THE MEN’, and it will be a stage where B1A4 shows off a manlier side to them.

With two different themes, both showcases are not to be missed!

To be eligible to win tickets to the showcase, you must purchase either the Limited Edition Version A, Limited Edition Version B or Regular Edition (first press) of the single released on the 29th of August, ‘Oyasumi good night -Japanese ver.-‘, which comes with a ticket for the draw.

―― This time it will be about Sandeul.
Baro: Hmm… Because it’s about Sandeul~ I need some time to thing. (laugh)

―― CNU, you’ve been personally called on by Sandeul.

Sandeul: Wait, what’s next?
Jinyoung: There has been an occasion where the doorknob to the toilet in our dorm was spoilt.
CNU: Ah~ That one~ (laugh)
Jinyoung: Despite it being made of metal, Sandeul spoilt it by turning it.
Sandeul: I didn’t even use much strength, but it spoilt! (bitter smile)
Gongchan: We got angry with Sandeul.
Sandeul: I didn’t destroy it, I was just turning it.
CNU: This is how Sandeul is like usually. laugh)
Jinyoung: It remained in that (broken) condition for a period of time. But someday when I went into the toilet, the doorknob was totally destroyed so it was hard to open the door. Since we don’t usually open the door, we just left it without a doorknob.
Sandeul: …..
Jinyoung: I was annoyed with Sandeul so I directed a “Sandeul, what is this~” to gripe at him. But he was lying on the bed staring blankly at his manhwa book. He wore glasses then, and when he looked up through the lenses his eyes looked really small. (laugh) That appearance of him was so cute that I thought “Oh well, we’ll be fine~”.

Jinyoung: Yes. Sandeul’s life is really so interesting to the point that it is incomprehensible. (laugh)

 Vol.4 CNU is the reliable mother! 

―― This episode will be about CNU. Previously, it was mentioned that you took on the role of the mother in B1A4.
Baro: CNU hyung is very meticulous and checks everything carefully. When we leave the dorm, he will ask if we’ve turned off the gas, switched off the light and turned off the water in the bathroom. He is always last to come out. Even when we are out for work, he always makes sure that none of the members are not around.

―― He seems like a teacher doing roll call. (laugh)
CNU: I protect the other 4 members from behind.
Baro: Sometimes I do think that he cares too much (laugh), but because CNU hyung checks everything well we can have our piece of mind. I’m always thankful.

―― CNU is so meticulous that he checks even the smallest things, is that right?
CNU: Yes. Even after becoming a part of B1A4 and living together, I felt that I have to be more aware of everything.

―― Just like a mother raising 4 children.
Gongchan: Since Jinyoung hyung is the father, there are only 3 children.

―― That’s right.
Gongchan: Occasionally Jinyoung hyung becomes a child though. (laugh)
Jinyoung: To be exact, there are times where I am reckless too. (laugh) I rely a lot on CNU.
Gongchan: Also, instead of thinking for himself first, CNU hyung always thinks for the other party.
Sandeul: Yes yes~ (Agrees)
Gongchan: For example, when there is something delicious, he will first offer it to the members and staffs before eating it himself.

―― Even if there is only 1 left, and it is something that you really like to eat?
CNU: (Immediately) Yes.

―― That means he is usually hungry?
CNU: (After thinking for some time) Yes.
Sandeul: Mummy~~~ (Sticking to CNU)

Jinyoung: I think it’s amazing that CNU is always able to make calm and rational decisions. I’m jealous. It was previously mentioned I’m quite positively aggressive. If there is something I want, there is no way that even the members will be able to have. Eventually I will overdo it, and get tired. This positivity also has its disadvantages. (laugh) At times like those, CNU will make an accurate and rational decision to pull me back on track.

―― The mother (CNU) who naturally supports the reckless father (Jinyoung).
Jinyoung: CNU and I make a good balance, and work is usually carried out efficiently. He considers even the smallest details, so everything is carried out perfectly.

Sandeul: When I’m with CNU hyung, I can relax my mind.
